The Health Benefits Of Black Tea

Like all tea, the health benefits of black tea focus on the same areas. Since black tea comes from the same Camellia sinensis plant as does all tea, we can expect it to have similar benefits like green and white teas.

However, since more research is done on green tea concerning health benefits, it is easy to believe that green is the only tea that offers the greater of them...this simply isn't true!

The health benefits of black tea are the same as its green tea cousin. Black tea research done shows us the same promises/results we get from green tea, we can consume from a cup of black.

Although green tea since it is less processed has more antioxidant properties than black tea, these differences are not off the charts.

The studies and benefits:

  • new research done by Milton Schiffenbauer of Pace University suggests that drinking either green or black tea can help wipe out viruses in your mouth, (like herpes), and also help prevent diarrhea, pneumonia, cystitis, and skin infections. He states that these teas "deactivate" such viruses.
  • studies done at Rutgers University reveal that black tea may help prevent stomach, prostate, and breast cancer. The chemicals found in black tea show it may slow down cancer growth. A compound called TF-2 causes such cancer cells to "commit suicide" while normal cells remain unaffected.

    Dr. Kuang Yu Chen of Rutgers states that TF-2 has very interesting properties for fighting color cancer cells. His team revealed that when normal cells were exposed to the TF-2 compound, nothing happened, but when cancer cells were exposed they underwent a process called "apoptosis programmed cell death" and were destroyed.

    The antioxidant compound TF-2 can also help abate inflammation as well.

In a test done by Dr. Joseph Vita, of the Boston University School of Medicine, he had some heart patients drink plain water, and the others black tea. After a month, the patients who drank the tea showed impaired blood vessel functioning had improved by 50%!

    In a related 10 year study done in the Netherlands, men who consumed 3 cups of black tea daily decreased their chances by 50% of dying from heart disease.

  • More health benefits of black tea are, helps prevent tooth decay, can lower cholestrol, act as an arthritis soother, and may help folks burn fat.

    These health benefits of black tea are interesting, but scientists insist that more research on both animals and humans need to be conducted to help broaden and solidify these claims.

Even though researchers can’t quite agree on every aspect, I’m sold on the fact that a few cups a day will do its best to protect me from heart disease, a stroke, cancer, and more.

Tea contains high levels of antioxidants, some of which are called polyphenols, flavonoids, and catechins, and all of which take on the “free radicals” in the body and prevent them from harming the healthy cells on board.

Black Tea is made from the same plant as green tea and white tea.  Black tea doesn't mean tea without milk, and white tea doesn't mean tea with milk.  The difference is the way the tea leaves are processed after picking.  Green and white teas are hardly processed at all, whereas black tea is fully oxidized.

Benefits Of Black Tea

Research has shown that drinking tea has been found to have health benefits on the human body. A study by the Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and the Environment found a correlation between regular consumption of black tea and reduced risk of stroke. The reason for this may be attributed to the fact that foods that are high in flavonoids - phytonutrients with antioxidant benefits have their own health benefits. The research was conducted with different fruits, vegetables, and Black Tea. It was found that while some of the flavonoids were obtained from fruits and vegetables, seventy percent came from black tea. The study was done on a group of 552 men over a 15 year time period. Researchers concluded that the flavonoids in black tea helped reduce the production of LDL - the cholesterol that can lead to stroke and heart attacks. The research further proved that men who drank over four cups of black tea per day had a significant lower risk of heart attacks than men who consumed two cups or three. Another study which was conducted on 3000 adults in Saudi Arabia showed that regular consumption of black tea can reduce the chances of a coronary heart attack by over 50%.

Black tea is one of the most common in the tea family. In the black tea family, there is Darjeeling, orange pekoe and other similar breakfast teas. The teas come from the same plant, but each variety is processed differently. The world’s major tea growing areas are in the higher elevations of China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, and East Africa. After the evergreen shoots of black tea are picked, they are withered, rolled, fermented, and dried. Caffeine is an important ingredient in tea.

Apart from reducing the chances of stroke the low amounts of caffeine found in Black Tea promotes blood flow in the brain without stimulating the heart. The caffeine helps to improve mental focus and concentration and the trace element fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. Black tea has also been found to be effective against diarrhea and also has a therapeutic effect on gastric and intestinal illnesses because of its tannins, which decrease intestinal activity and exerts an anti-diarrhea effect.

Black Tea has also been known to reduce stress to a great extent. The study of black tea found it helps cut levels of the stress hormone cortisol, circulating in the blood. They found people who drank tea were able to de-stress more quickly than those who drank a tea substitute. Although it does not appear to reduce the actual levels of stress we experience, black tea does seem to have a greater effect in bringing stress hormone levels back to normal. Another research project indicated that the amino acid L-thiamine might help the body's immune system response when fighting infection, by boosting the disease-fighting capacity of gamma delta T cells. The study included a four-week trial with 11 coffee drinkers and 10 tea drinkers, who consumed 600ml of coffee or black tea daily. Blood sample analysis found that the production of anti-bacterial proteins was up to five times higher in the tea-drinkers, an indicator of a stronger immune response.
The effect of milk on tea has been found to reduce the health benefits which Black Tea has. Hence, if you are drinking tea for its health benefits you need to ensure that you drink black tea liqueur sans milk.
